The NorthStar Program
ProStar Lacrosse is proud to announce the NorthStar Program.
In 2007, ESPN aired a documentary about the introduction of lacrosse and its prevention of teen suicides in Kugluktuk, Nunavut. Inspired by this story, ProStar Lacrosse created the NorthStar Program.
The NorthStar Program is designed to introduce lacrosse to Inuit communities and Inuit youth in order to provide a focus on sport, healthy living and healthy life choices. Called the “Creator’s Game” by First Nations, lacrosse, is Canada’s National Summer Sport. Unlike other sports, lacrosse carries both strong sport and spiritual elements that can help give focus for youth. It’s a fast paced sport for both boys and girls and can be played both indoor and outdoor.
ProStar Lacrosse believes that lacrosse can provide a strong centre for Inuit youth; one which can help nurture growth in both body and spirit.
The first camp will be introduced in Iqaluit, Nunavut and run from 23-27 August 2010. Based on the success of this camp, the NorthStar Program will expand to include other Inuit communities throughout the North.
ProStar Lacrosse would like to thank First Air, the Nepean Knights Minor Lacrosse Association, Uqsiq Communications and Beat Studios for their support.
We invite you to watch the ESPN documentary and ask you to get involved to support the NorthStar Program.
